What is a Sensory Deprivation Tank?

A sensory deprivation tank, also known as an isolation tank or float tank, is a lightless, soundproof tank filled with warm water and high levels of Epsom salt. The high salt concentration allows the body to effortlessly float on the surface, providing a weightless experience. The tank itself is designed to isolate the individual from external sensory stimuli, creating an environment of complete relaxation and sensory deprivation. Our float pods are designed by Floatworks’ original founder and Non-Executive Director, the i-sopod was the world’s first ever float pod. It’s still world-leading, and is the pod of choice for the UFC, the US Navy Seals, San Francisco Giants, and many others.

The concept of sensory deprivation tanks dates back to the 1950s when American scientist John C. Lilly developed the first prototype. Lilly believed that by eliminating external stimuli, individuals could achieve a heightened state of consciousness and tap into the depths of their minds. Since then, sensory deprivation tanks have gained popularity as a tool for relaxation, meditation, and self-exploration.

Our sensory deprivation pods are filled with warm water (around 36°C) with half a tonne of dissolved Epsom salts, creating a buoyant solution that allows the body to effortlessly float. The pods are equipped with a door or lid that can be closed (or left open a littel if you are claustrophobic), enclosing the individual inside and blocking out external light and sound. This creates an environment of complete darkness and silence, enabling the user to disconnect from the outside world and focus inward.

The Benefits of using a Sensory Deprivation Tank

Using a sensory deprivation tank offers a myriad of benefits for both the mind and body. The experience of floating weightlessly in a calm and serene environment can have profound effects on our overall well-being. Here are some of the key benefits that sensory deprivation tanks can provide:

1. Stress reduction: Floating in a sensory deprivation tank triggers the relaxation response in the body, reducing stress levels and promoting a sense of calmness. The absence of external stimuli allows the nervous system to relax, helping to alleviate anxiety and tension.

A 2018 study by the Laureate Institute for Brain Research found:

‘Floating substantially reduced anxiety, with participants reporting significant reductions in stress, muscle tension, pain, depression and negative affect, accompanied by a significant improvement in mood characterised by increases in serenity, relaxation, happiness and overall well-being […] the most severely anxious participants reported the largest effects.’

2. Pain relief: The buoyancy provided by the Epsom salt solution in the tank relieves pressure on the joints and muscles, helping to alleviate pain and promote relaxation. Floating in the tank can provide relief for conditions such as chronic pain, arthritis, fibromyalgia, and muscle soreness. Read more on how floating can help with muscle and chronic pain.

3. Enhanced mindfulness and meditation: The sensory deprivation tank creates an ideal environment for meditation and mindfulness practices. The absence of external distractions allows individuals to focus their attention inward, deepening their meditation practice and promoting a greater sense of self-awareness.

4. Improved sleep: Regular sessions in a sensory deprivation tank can help improve sleep quality by reducing stress and promoting relaxation. The deep sense of calmness experienced during floating can carry over into sleep, leading to more restful and rejuvenating nights. Read our real case study on how floating has helped one of our many customers to transform her sleep.

5. Enhanced creativity and problem-solving: The state of relaxation and sensory deprivation achieved in the tank can stimulate creativity and enhance problem-solving abilities. Without external distractions or interruptions, individuals can tap into their subconscious mind and access new ideas and insights.

6. Muscle recovery and athletic performance: Floating in a sensory deprivation tank can aid in muscle recovery by reducing inflammation and promoting blood circulation. Athletes can benefit from the weightless environment to relieve muscle tension and enhance their overall performance. NBA players Stephen Curry and Harrison Barnes both use floatation therapy to visualise, heal and enhance their overall performance. A study on basketball players displayed evidence of skill improvement after floatation. It’s suspected that the more relaxed state, enabled for keener focus on shooting, leading to a higher percentage of successful shots.

How does a Sensory Deprivation Tank work?

Sensory deprivation tanks work by creating an environment of total isolation from external sensory stimuli. By eliminating external distractions, the tanks allow individuals to focus their attention inward and explore the depths of their consciousness. Here’s how the process works at Floatworks:

1. Entering the tank: We recommend that you float naked so that you feel completely free. After a quick shower, you step into the tank and close the door or lid behind them, plunging yourself into complete darkness. Find a comfortable position in the water. Let your head and neck relax, and feel the tension release from your muscles. The water in the tank is heated to match your body temperature, creating a seamless transition between the body and the surrounding environment.

2. Floating: You will have 10 minutes of ambient music to help you relax. As you lie back, you will immediately experience the sensation of weightlessness. The high salt concentration in the water allows the body to effortlessly float on the surface without any effort. This eliminates the pressure on joints and muscles, providing a deeply relaxing experience.

3. Sensory deprivation: When you feel comfortable you can turn the light off. You can also leave it on, or turn it back on at any time. The tank is designed to block out all external stimuli, including light, sound, and gravity. The absence of sensory input triggers a state of sensory deprivation, allowing the mind to enter a deeply relaxed and introspective state.

4. Duration of the session: The duration of a standard Floatworks session is 60 minutes, some of our more experienced customers like to float for 120 mintues. This extended period of uninterrupted relaxation gives individuals ample time to disconnect from the outside world and explore their inner self. Read our blog to learn more about a 2-hour float.

5. Exiting the tank: The music will come back on 5 minutes before your session ends. You’ll know it’s the end of your float when the light comes back on. You can slowly open the door or lid and step out of the tank. It is common to feel a sense of tranquility and post-float euphoria after the experience. Many customers report feeling rejuvenated, refreshed, and more centered. We recommend you take some time to have a complimentary tea and chill before going back out into the world. Our Relaxation Room is perfect if you’re in the mood for more peace and quiet, or fancy reading or meditating.

As the UK’s leading floatation therapy centre for over 30 years, we have perfected the experience from start to finish. Watch our video run through of what to expect, and some tips for getting the most out of your float.
